Take Root: Finding the Right Soil for Growth
As I reflect on my theme for the year—Take root, take care, bloom—I’ve been unpacking what each part truly means. Today, I’m focusing on “take root.”
Last year brought a lot of uprooting for me. I left my long-time acting representation after many years and stepped away from a day job I’d held for two decades. Uprooting is scary—it shakes the familiar. But it also creates the opportunity to find soil where you can be better nurtured.
I realized I’d been feeling depleted, stuck in situations that no longer provided the nourishment I needed. But in the midst of this, I caught glimpses of something better. This fall, I worked on a creative project with people I deeply respected. At first, I questioned if I belonged in that room. But no one else did. Instead, I was challenged and supported—a combination I hadn’t felt in a long time.
It felt like I was a plant that had finally found the right-sized pot. That experience made it clear: I need to take root in spaces like these—spaces that foster growth and nourishment.
This realization extends beyond just my personal journey—it’s something many of us experience. We hold onto environments, jobs, or relationships that no longer serve us, fearing the discomfort of change. But true growth requires the right conditions. Sometimes, we need to uproot ourselves to thrive.
So, I’ll leave you with this question:
Are you in the right soil?
Do the rooms, teams, and environments you’re a part of provide nourishment—or are you in depleted soil or a pot that’s too small?
If you’re feeling stuck, maybe it’s time to take root somewhere new. Take a moment to reflect on where you are—and if it’s no longer serving you, consider what steps you can take to find more nourishing ground.
